There are two kinds of tray ceilings, one is a recessed tray and this has the centre section of the ceiling approximately twelve inches higher than around the edges of the room. The other is an inverted tray where the center section protrudes slightly into the room; this style is often used in kitchens. These ceilings can emphasis a feeling of space in a room and can be adorned with lighting, crown moldings or other decorations to enhance the look of the room. When trying to decide on a tray ceiling design, there are a number of ideas to be found. These may include using the angles of a ceiling to accentuate its look with darker style suitable colors on the walls, the same color on the edges of the tray and the ceiling sections painted in a light color. This could also be done in reverse with a dark colored ceiling and lighter colors painted on the walls and the edges of the tray.
Other ideas for tray ceiling designs are the use of colors that match furniture and other elements of a room, the color could be similar shades to curtains or bedding in a bedroom, this could also be used for rooms such as a dining, entrance or hallway as well as a lounge room or if the room has wainscoting this could be duplicated. Another idea is the use of textures to highlight the tray, and this can be done using any means that gives the right effect. Patterns may be another idea that can be used to give the right effect to a tray ceiling. Where there are crown moldings these could be painted the same color as the ceiling or the same color as the walls but this would depend on the effect it would have when finished.
Tray ceiling designs can also be enhanced with lighting and the kind of lighting used would depend on the color, shape and style of the room, the crown molding design, furniture and what the room is used for. So when deciding on the right lighting for the room these things need to be taken into consideration. Another idea is having a faux scene done, this is a painting done on the ceiling, such as a pale blue background with white lacey edges, a scene or something else which gives a focal point of interest. The use of ceiling fans or suspended ceiling fans that match the room can add to the decorative effect on this area. So before deciding to repaint and redecorate your tray ceiling and the associated room do a little research and you will probably come up with just what you want to do.
