One of the most important turkey frying tips is to never attempt deep frying turkey indoors. This has lead to many house fires and accidents over the years. Simply put, take it outside.
While it may seem like common sense, deep frying a turkey outside does not include the garage or patio. This can be just as dangerous as cooking your turkey indoors.
Always use a turkey fryer thermometer. Although many do not come with this as standard, there are multiple reasons to use one. For starters, the temperature of the oil can become much too hot resulting in fire and/or serious injury. These thermometers are relatively cheap and can be purchased at a variety of places.
Before deep frying turkey, make sure it is completely thawed. The excess water can cause the fluids to overflow. Also, a partially frozen turkey will take longer to cook.
Safety should always be first. When deep frying turkey, someone should always be present. In addition, keep children and pets away from the area.
Use personal protective equipment. Before deep frying turkey, gather up items such as a fire extinguisher, pot holders, and your thermometer. Protecting the eyes with goggles or safety glasses is not a bad idea either, as the oil can pop.
When using a propane model of turkey fryer, turn down the heat before putting the turkey in or taking it out. This will also help eliminate burns and overflow of hot oil.
Tips for frying a turkey will usually come with the manufacturer's instructions. Be sure to read these and adhere to them beforehand.
Always make sure that your deep fryer is sitting in a level area. Tipping over of turkey fryer's has lead to serious injury and it is not worth the risk.
One of the number one tips for frying a turkey is to have someone else handy in the event of an accident. By the someone else, a responsible adult.
Deep frying turkey is a great alternate to roasting. It allows for quicker cooking time and a delectable taste. However, it's important to remember that deep frying turkey can also be dangerous and precautions should be taken.
