Tips on Defending Your Home Against Bugs

Linda M. McCloud

Bugs are annoying. Bugs can spread diseases. Bugs are plain gross. Everyone will agree that they do not want any sort of bugs in their home. But how can we defend our homes against these nasty creatures? Here are some tips to help us we can all use.

Don't Send Out Invitations To Them

This sounds like an easy tip. None of us thinks that we are inviting a bug or a nest of bugs into our home. Yet, little habits may actually show that we are inviting them into our homes without realizing that we are. These habits include:

  • Not regularly cleaning our kitchen after eating. We may put this off for several hours or until the next morning. This is actually sending out an invitation to bugs to home and feast on our left over's. While we are cleaning, we need to remember to always clean the stove tops and counter tops for any drizzles we may left behind, too.
  • Cleaning up after Fido and Tiger ate. Yes, our furry friends can leave messes after eating just as we can. They can also leave crumbs behind for bugs to chow on during their next buffet.
  • Dry up any and all water sources. If you spill water, clean it up promptly. If you have a leak, fix it promptly. Water droplets can give thirsty bugs a place to drink.
  • Dim your outside lights. These can draw bugs, especially moths. If you must have light, switch to yellow light that doesn't attract as many bugs.
  • Clean around the outside of your home. Do away with places that bugs can hide and next. This includes garden hoses you are no longer using, as well as old flower pots. You should also make sure you cover up all garbage cans and that you keep your downspouts cleaned.

Boost Your Home Defenses

Don't allow bugs a place to enter. This means you need to caulk all holes you see in your foundation. You also need to repair in holes in your screens.

Prepare A Plan Of Action For The Bugs That Has Entered Your Home

If you know that there are bugs in your home, prepare a plan of action. Decide what types of bait to use to kill them in their tracks. Consider using sticky traps if you have ants or roaches. Vacuum up in spiders or spider webs you see.

Call In the Pros

If all else fails, call in the pros. You shouldn't allow the bugs to win and take over your home. Call in the pros and save your home.
