Have you wondered how to talk to your children about Internet safety without them getting angry? Older kids especially will probably get angry if you try to approach them with the subject. Since it's an important topic that needs to be discussed your best bet is to just start the discussion and try to get them to understand the importance of being safe online.
Before you approach your children with the topic of Internet safety, make sure that they are going to be willing to listen to what you have to say. If there is already tension between you and them, it's probably not a good time to approach the subject. If you have older children, it would probably make the situation worse between you two. It would probably drive a teenage child to disobey you on purpose.
You could approach your child about Internet safety just when they are they are signing off of the computer for the day. As they are shutting down the computer you could ask them what precautions do they take to be safe while online. Approaching them when they are just getting off the computer is a great time because then they won't have a reason to go into a defense mode.
Find out what your kids know about Internet safety before you begin discussing the subject with them. Don't assume that they already know enough to protect themselves while they are online. Continue on with the discussion, even if your kid tells you they are being safe when they are on the Internet. Give them rules and tips on ways that they can be safe while online.
If your child is a member of social networking sites you should really discuss ways on how they can be safe while social networking with other people. You need to make them understand that they could be talking to anyone, maybe even a pedophile or a murder.
Any personal blogs that your child may have also needs to be talked about. There are many websites that allow you to set up free blog accounts. A lot of teens use blogs as a way to escape from their problems and communicate with friends. Make sure that your kids know that anyone can see their blogs and not just people they know.
There are a lot of approaches you can take in warning your kids about Internet safety. Try to talk to them about safety habits as soon as possible because all kids need to be aware of the potential dangers of the Internet.
