Tips for Dressing for the Prom for Plus Sized Girls

Kathy OGorman
Women and girls come in all sizes, and all of us like dressing up and looking our best. If you are plus-sized and voluptuous, it might be challenging to find a prom dress that you feel flatters you. However, with some easy tips, dressing for the prom can be fun, no matter your size.

Call ahead to the dress shops in your area to inquire about plus sized formal dresses and what they have available. This will make shopping easier and you won't waste time going to stores and being told they don't have your size. Thankfully, fashion designers are starting to realize that real women have curves, so plus sizes are become easier to find, even in prom dresses.

What kind of dress should you look for? Most experts agree that plus-sizes look great in A-line dresses, dresses that fit through the bodice and then have a skirt that flares to form the letter "A."

These dresses emphasize your bust line and then flow over the parts you want to camouflage. Choosing a dress in one color will also make you have a slimmer silhouette. Yes, it's true that dark colors make you look smaller, but don't limit yourself to black and navy, unless you like those colors. Choosing a color that makes you feel good is best, because when you feel good in the dress, you'll shine regardless of the color. If you have light coloring, a dark color may overpower you and a pastel look much better with your complexion and hair color. One teen I know wore a yellow dress and with her red hair and suntan, she looked fabulous.

Buy a dress and shoes that are comfortable. Don't think you will lose weight before the prom or wear foundation garments to hold you in. You will enjoy your prom much more if you are comfortable and not constantly trying to hold in your tummy or straighten a skirt that is too tight. No one will know the size dress you buy but you and the salesperson, so buy a size you feel comfortable in regardless of the size number.

Many prom dresses and other formals are sleeveless. A sleeveless or strapless dress can look great on a plus-sized girl. If you worry about how your arms look, choose a pretty shawl to wear over your shoulders. You will also be more comfortable on a cool night.

If you can't find a dress you like in your area, there are several online shops that cater to plus sizes in formalwear. One is http://www.sydneyscloset.com/ who advertises that they have dresses in stock and ready to ship. Another is www.promdressshop.com.

Your prom night is special, and you are special. When you put on your prom dress, you should feel like a princess, whatever your size. And don't forget to smile and take lots of pictures!

Not only good advice for plus sizes, just plain good advice. Girls you can also try David's Bridal if you are looking for a formal gown. Unfortunately up here the trend is more toward the party dress these days.
