Tips on How to Drive Safely in Heavy Rain

The rainy season is here and I'd like to give you some tips on how to stay safe while driving. Many people don't know how to drive safely or cautiously when it comes to heavy downpours of rain. They drive just like they would on a normal day when there is no rain. If drivers want to be safe and keep others safe they must learn to follow some of the tips that I am going to give to them. We as drivers must realize that we have other people's lives in our hands when we are out their driving. When we drive irresponsibly or without caution we can affect other people's lives.

The first tip that I would like to give to you is to never set your car on cruise control when it is raining. The reason for this is because sometimes cruise control can have a tendency to speed up if the car is bumped in some way. If you were to start hydroplaning and bumping around then your car could actually pick up speed. This of course could cause more problems. If you so happen to hydroplane, you should never brake or try to steer your steering wheel hard. This can cause you to skid and you might become injured because of this.

A second tip that I can give to you when it is rainy heavy is to drive as close to the middle of the street as possible. If you drive too close to the side of the rode you may get flooded. Roads have a tendency to collect water near the curbs; especially if the drainage system is not good. If you stay towards the middle of the road you should also be able to see if there are potholes in the road. Just be careful to leave the oncoming traffic room to do the same. Don't cross the lines.

A third tip that I can give to you to stay more cautious while driving in heavy rain is to avoid large puddles. Just as I stated above you can become flooded but you also do not know what debris is under the puddle. There may also be potholes in the puddle and this can cause hazards.

The last tip that I can give to you is about your lights. If it is foggy outside or raining really hard you are going to want to keep your high beams off. You will want to use your fog lights instead. What happens when you use your high beams is that the lighting can bounce off of the water and the fog and this will make it hard to see. It is also harder for the oncoming traffic to see because your lights are in their eyes.

If you follow these tips you should be fine in the rainy weather. Be sure to keep a look out for those who are not following these tips though. Stay farther back from them and keep your speed down. If you happen to get in an accident it won't be as bad as it would have been because your speed will be reduced. Also, do not forget to keep up the maintenance on your windshield wipers too. This is just as important as all of the other tips that I have given to you.
