Portion control is always the first step. Never supersize it; in fact, don't even medium it. Stick with the small fry. You satisfy the craving for the French fries, yet you don't over indulge in them. Avoid eating too much of the same thing. When eating out, a good way to eat a variety of foods is to make sure that you have a wide variety of colors on your plate. If it's all the same color, then you have a problem. If you have no green on your plate, you have a bigger problem, Instead of getting a large fry and double cheeseburger; get a small fry, side salad, and a regular hamburger. Go easy on the dressing too. And at all costs, avoid ranch! If you have to get the double cheeseburger, nix the bun. The bun just adds more calories. Avoid overindulging in breads, cakes and donuts at coffee shops as well. You can have them, but not too often. If you get a large muffin, only eat half of it, and save the rest for later. If you're someone who can't have a cup of coffee without a donut, get one that is not glazed.
Portion control is important in terms of food, but the same thing goes with soft drinks. If at all possible, always get water. Water has no calories. IT is also a staple in the diet of anyone trying to lose weight. But if you have to get a soft drink, stick with a small. Soda is delicious but it has no place in your diet. It offers no substance at all. Avoid those sugary coffee drinks, along with the shakes. They are the worst! Some of them are over 600 calories. If you have to have one, get the smallest size available.
Always have fruits, crackers and nuts to snack on during days you know you're going to eat fast food. This can dramatically reduce your hunger. Semi eating out is also a good alternative when it comes to eating fast food. If you have to have your fried chicken wings, make a salad at home to eat with them. Don't get the potatoes, biscuits and macaroni and cheese that come with it.
I hope this helped! I know Americans have busy schedules and don't always have time to cook at home. This is no excuse to eat badly though. It is all about watching what you eat and how much of it you eat. You can't eat out everyday either. Even though restaurants have healthy items, you are still better off cooking your own food at home.
