Are you interested in some tips for an effective and powerful walking stride?

As you know walking is the simplest, easiest and most natural way of exercising. Research has shown that walking is a physical, mental and psychological booster. It increases energy, improves circulation, reduces stress and anxiety along with increasing mental acuity. Walking is also a great aerobic exercise that increases endorphins resulting in better sleep and a better outlook on life.

In order to reap the full benefits of this natural form of exercise it is best to know the following secrets to a powerful and effective walking stride.
The three secrets to a powerful and effective walking stride are:
Posture, Stride Technique and Arm Movements.

Posture
Stand erect, this will make your stride easier and you will avoid back pain.

Keep your chin up, this will open up your breathing passages and allow for the adequate use of oxygen.

Pull in your stomach, tuck in your buttocks and rotate your hips forward, this will give you good back support.

Keep your eyes forward at about 20 feet ahead for focus.

Stride Technique
Take short, quick steps pushing off with a heel to toe movement.

Remember that your forward leg has no power; your back leg is the force that drives you forward.

Walking in a straight line also maximizes your speed if you ever progressed to competing as a race walker.

Arm Movements
Your arms help to move you along.

They should be held 90 degrees at the elbow with hands loose in a closed curl.

Do not clench the fist as this can raise your blood pressure.
A good analogy of this is when you go to have your blood work done, you are asked to clinch your fist to allow the blood flow to build up in your arm for better access to your veins.

Keep your elbows close to your body and swing your arms as you stride to propel you along,

Do not raise your arms above your breast bone.

Opening and closing your fingers will allow better circulation in your fingers which will avoid numbness or swelling of the fingers.

The faster you move your arms the faster your strides. This is one of the secrets of speed walking.

As you practice and improve the form of your walking stride, you will find that walking becomes effortless and you will enjoy walking more.
