Tips for Encouraging Your Child to Eat Healthy

Many concerns are placed on the health of our children. More and more children are growing obese. The government has gotten involved by requiring children to participate in more physical education at school and requiring school lunchrooms to make healthier food choices.

However, it should not be left up to the teachers or the schools to ensure that your children are healthy. Parents must also take an active role in their child's health. Begin with the things that your child eats.

Encourage your child to eat a variety of food colors. Challenge your child to eat different colors each day. At the end of the day, ask your child what he/she ate. You can even make a game of or keep a chart of what foods were eaten.

Make sure that your child realizes how important healthy eating really is. Make it a point to take the time to sit down together and eat a meal. Let your child see that you eat healthy and take the time to choose healthy foods. Eating your meals in the car after stopping at drive-thru windows does not send a good message to your child about healthy eating choices.

Do not expect your child to change his/her eating style all at once. If your child is not brave about trying new foods, it may take some time. Begin by adding cheese to your child's greens and veggies. Try making the foods look fun and appealing. Create funny faces with the items. Let your child help with planning and cooking dinner. If your child invests time in the meal, it will make the meal more appealing.

If you do not plan on letting your child eat junk food and drink cokes, then do not buy them. The best way to encourage your child to eat healthy is to shop healthy. If sugars are in the house, your family is likely to eat them. When grocery shopping stock up on good foods that your family can enjoy.

Ensuring that your child eats healthy can take time and effort. However, it will be well worth it in the end. Also talk with your child about making healthy choices when eating at school. Pack your child's lunch or go over the menu with your child. Monitor and discuss which foods are best.

Starting good eating habits when your child is young can save your child a lot of health issues as he/she grows into an adult.
