Tips for Enhancing Your Home with Tin Ceiling Design

Scott Kessman

If you are thinking of incorporating a tin ceiling design in one of the rooms in your home, then these ideas may be helpful. Some homes already have tin ceilings that have been painted over to give them a plaster look. This type of ceiling can be stripped of the paint, a protective base coat can be added, repairs to any damaged areas can be done, and then the ceiling can be repainted with an authentic looking color so that the tin ceiling is restored to its original look. If there are any large areas of damage, replacement sheets of tin ceiling can be purchased, and if the right design is not available a panel from the ceiling may be used for creating a mold and a customized pressing can be done.

Where a completely new tin ceiling design is to be attempted there are often quite a number of tile designs to choose from, so first of all you will need to decide on what metal, pattern and color would look best in your home. Take into consideration the furnishing in the rooms to be done as this will affect the outcome, try to decide on a pattern that will enhance the decor, the lighting and the floor coverings, unless you have already planned to change them. There are quite a large number of colors and these may range from white, copper, silver, black, brick, brass, burgundy, gold and green and quite a number of other shades. Some tin ceiling designs also have some parts of the tile design on the tin in a separate color to accentuate the design. There are also a number of different types of metals used to make these sheets of tiles that will need to be decided on.

Another thing to look at is what kind of ceiling you will be putting the tin ceiling design over as this will make a difference as to how you will fix it in place. If it is drywall or plaster this is often done with a snaplock, wood or joists will generally require nailing or attaching with screws. There is also the opportunity for suspended ceilings, backsplash and walls which can be done in either a flat or patterned tile. Molding can also be added to the edges, you may also like to decide to use unfinished tin ceiling tiles and in this case you can paint them a color that you prefer. When choosing to use the colored tiles these can be coated with a clear polyurethane to protect them. Low ceilings may require a light colored tile to give them a raised look otherwise dark colors may reduce the effect. So before putting a tin ceiling in your home it might be wise to do some research to make sure you pick out the right colors, designs and choose the right metals to use so that your project will be a success.
