Tips for Exercising when You Have Children

How to Keep Yourself and Family Fit

Herman Cruz
It's common for women to be active before they have children and experience motherhood, but often moms have to put aside exercise due to lack of time and to meet all their responsibilities. Usually parents also have to work hard to support their family, and even though they may share the housework, making the time to exercise can be difficult.

Another common reason for absence of exercising within the family is lack of energy, and that tired feeling takes away the appeal to exercise. So what can you do to get that exercise that makes you feel good and healthier back in your life without sacrificing time with your kids?

If you have embarked on the adventure of parenthood you may have left behind your morning runs, football games with your friends, or those aerobic dance classes during the week that you always looked forward to.

Exercise and parenting are two things that don't always go together. It may be because you have experienced the lack of sleep which makes any free time the ideal moment to rest or get some sleep. Or maybe your children already grew up but your days fly by taking them to school, painting class, soccer practice or ballet lessons. Perhaps, you have thought about it but you haven't found the perfect time to exercise and stay fit.

A recent study by the University of Pittsburgh confirms that parents are much more sedentary than single or married couples without children. This is because according to findings from the study, priorities change and the focus of attention is no longer friends, or yourself, or partner.

However, not exercising for being so focused on your children may end up being a double-edged sword. Exercise not only benefits the person doing it, but to those around them. The real question is, do you want to see your children grow? Physical activity is important to stay healthy and increase the chances of living longer, so if you are a parent with young children or adolescents, these tips will help you stay active:

Don't live with the excuse that you do not have time. There is plenty of evidence that shows that it doesn't take much time to exercise daily. Exercising either 15, 20 or 30 minutes a day, will keep you in shape. You can even distribute the exercise throughout the day.

With this evidence the myth that you have to spend hours in a gym to get fit is done. The experts say that quality is better than quantity.

Restate your priorities. Make time for yourself, dedicate half an hour a day to your physical and mental stability, this will allow you to give your best to others. Do not go for the easy way out by sitting on the couch or going shopping to clear your mind.

Take a walk or go to a yoga class. Anything that involves movement, makes you feel comfortable and allows you to be yourself should be the ideal routine to follow.

Ask for help. If your excuse is that there is nobody to leave your children with, create a circle of friends or family who can be with them for 30 minutes or an hour, while you exercise. Or make plans with your spouse and take turns taking care of the kids at a certain time of day while the other exercises.

Exercising with your children may be one of the best ways to stay healthy. Walking with your baby, playing ball with your kids, going swimming, taking a bike ride or playing volleyball in the park or beach, hiking is also a lot of fun. Always test your own creativity.

The best part of exercising with your kids is that incidentally, you will be instilling the importance of staying active. Remember that if you give an example by staying active, your children will be healthier and also understand the importance of exercising to promote good health.
