Tips for Financially Strapped College Students

Virginia Gaces
No one should be denied of education because of poverty", is an apt quotation from the University where I came from.

Indeed, financial problems should not be a reason why students could not go to College. "If there's a will, there's a way." This is especially true when one wants to acquire an education.

The following are 10 tips that struggling students could adapt to get through financially:

1. Apply for scholarships

There are several scholarships available for students in any category and for any particular need.

1.1. Academic scholarships

All schools have this scholarship available to academically deserving students depending upon their previous scholastic performances. This scholarship could be maintained until the student graduate, if they are able to achieve the required average.

1.2. Almost all schools offer free tuition fees for students who are talented. Those who could sing can become members of the school's choral group; and those who could dance, can join the dance troupe.

1.3. Some schools also have service scholarships for students who are children of army personnel, veterans, and other recognized groups.

1.4. Other schools have several sponsors who agree to pay for the tuition fees for students whom the school selects according to the set criteria.

2. Work part time in the university

Even 2 hours of part time work can definitely help you with the bills. Being an assistant librarian or laboratory aide are examples of this.

3. Look for sponsors from private organizations.

Your textbooks and school supplies, and even your tuition fees can be sponsored by private organizations if you know how to tap this rich financial resource. Big corporations are always on the look out to promote their company and sponsoring a student would be a good form of advertisement for them.

4. Learn how to stick to the basics

Spend wisely only on the things that you really need. You could buy together with your roommate or friend in bigger quantities to avail of discounts and coupons. Never buy anything that you just have a fancy to. Save on water and electricity. If they are not in use then turn them off. You maybe saving just a few cents but when amassed, can become big in amount.

5. Minimize nights out

These nights out usually create a hole in the student's pocket. There will always be something to spend on, whether it be booze, cigarette or food. Study instead. You can have all the nights out that you want after you graduate from your course and become a professional.

6. Avoid vices

Alcohol, cigarettes and drugs are expensive vices. This simply cannot mix with a student's budget. Either you continue with your vices and quit school or decide to leave them for good and graduate.

7. Learn how to budget properly

One has to learn to budget the available cash. Write down specific amounts on how much you will spend per category. Have a notebook and write down all expenses incurred during the month so you can see how much are you spending on something. This will also help you evaluate which ones you are spending on unnecessarily.

8. Learn how to save

Saving is a part of good financial management. Having a piggy bank or a student's savings account would teach you the value of small amounts of money turning into large savings later. Put in the piggy bank that loose change. A dime a day could "grow" into a dollar.

9. Tutor for a fee

You could offer your tutorial services for a minimal fee. This means you have to study on the double if you are to tutor your classmates. This could also prove to be beneficial because you'll be earning good grades too.

10. Be aware of accelerated courses

If you're an exceptionally gifted student, then accelerated courses could be made available to you. Inquire from your department if there are such courses offered to achievers. These courses would shorten your schooling and would provide you lesser expenses to achieve your goal.

There is nothing impossible that a determined, patient and highly motivated student could not attain. Having a good education in spite of financial constraints is one dream that is worth aspiring for.

Go for it!
