One of the most common, and certainly most damaging myths that circulate about art schools is the idea that any art school is the same as any other one. While this may indeed represent the popular view, it is certainly not the case. Like any other college, art schools specialize in different categories. It is recommended that any interested student do a thorough search and contact a variety of teachers at the selected school in order to determine if the school offers the education that they would like to receive. Remember to check carefully with faculty and do not be afraid to have lunch with a faculty member or talk to students to see what they are interested in and what the school specializes in.
Like any other college, make sure that you do a visitation or a tour, and definitely an overnight visitation if possible. While on campus, make sure to see all of the different buildings. Herein lies one of the major differences that comes with evaluating an art school as compared to a normal college. When looking at an art school, you want to make sure that they have all the appropriate tools and equipment that you are going to need in order to properly learn and excel in your field. For this reason, while doing your visitation, make sure that you ask all the questions possible that you think about regarding your major, and make sure to see every building you can. Your particular school needs to be suited for your individual needs, especially if your future is going to depend on the techniques and resources that are available to you.
While price and monetary costs would not be a concern in a perfect world, all too often they are. For that reason, you want to check on what the material fees and other costs that students are going to have to pay is going to be. For example, if a student is specializing in sculpture, does the school provide the clay, porcelain or other materials necessary, or is the student going to have to pay for the materials himself or herself. Over the length of time that a student spends at school, these materials can add up to cost quite a lot. For that reason, it may sometimes be better to go with a school that offers included materials in their tuition fees.
While location is important when considering any college, it plays an even bigger role when selecting an art college. Remember that students in an art school are going to have to use their creativity and passion to succeed. For that reason, those students need to be in an environment which fosters such creativity. Of course, this means different things for different people, and the school selected should "speak" or appeal to the individual student. If there is no connection, or if the student does not feel comfortable with the campus and the surrounding area, than it may be best to look for a different school.
Because art can be such a difficult field to break into it, it is incredibly important to check the school's success rate in placing graduate students into jobs. Even if a school seems to be a perfect fit, if their students cannot find a job or a career to pursue after they graduate, than it may not be the ideal choice.
All in all, choosing an art school does not have to be a difficult adventure. Indeed, finding a school should be a fun and rewarding experience. However, at the same time it should also be treated fairly seriously, as the decision about college can make a major impact on the rest of person's life. For that reason, make sure that you carefully evaluate the school of your choice, whether it be an art school or a traditional college. Also remember that student's interested in art should not rule out traditional colleges, as many do offer majors in various aspects of art. Just remember to approach the search for an art school carefully and intelligently, and it is entirely possible to find a school which is a perfect fit, and will prepare a student to do what they love for the rest of their lives, and have an incredibly enjoyable experience doing such.
