Of course, the first step is to measure your kitchen and know approximately how you want it laid out. For example, you need to know where the refrigerator, stove, sink, and dishwasher will go. Once you know these things and the size and general layout of the kitchen, you are armed and ready. Head for the home improvement centers and cabinet shops with your measurements in hand. Once there, you need to convey the point that you are very close to being ready for new cabinets. You'll be amazed at how eager the salespeople are to help you design your new kitchen. Some of the home improvement centers have computer generated layout design. You more or less explain to the salesperson the size and layout you want, and the computer will print out a set of kitchen plans. The plans are accurate and detailed.
Many cabinet shops also have these computer programs to design kitchen cabinet layouts. Cabinet shops may be a little less enthusiastic about designing a kitchen and then handing the plans over to you. They will probably want to "come out and measure for the best results." If you allow them to do this, make sure they know you are under no obligation to buy from them at this point.
And of course, there's the old faithful resource, the internet. Anything and everything you want can be found on the internet these days. Just type in what you are looking for and presto! There it is. The same goes for kitchen cabinet plans. So, if you are creative, you can actually design your own kitchen cabinets. Just type in the magic words: Kitchen cabinet plans, and let the designing begin.
So you see, there's no need to fret, just take your time and pick out the set of kitchen cabinet plans that works best for you and your kitchen. But choose carefully, because the plans may be free, but the cabinets sure won't be.
