One way you can determine if your stylist is experienced is by looking for certificates or other documentation that says she has completed specific courses in coloring and dyeing hair. Most of them who have will have these posted prominently somewhere on or around their station or shop.
Another way to find out if your stylist knows what she's doing when it comes to hair coloring is to ask her what she recommends for your hair. If she knows what she's doing, she'll take a few minutes to examine your hair closely, so that she can figure out its texture and type. This way, she'll be able to suggest an appropriate product.
If she does not take a few moments to examine your hair, or does not take the time to discuss what your last hair colorist did and how you felt the results turned out, or if she is quick to offer a pat answer that makes you believe she may be pushing (voluntarily or otherwise) the salon's products, then you may want to seek out someone else for your coloring procedures.
Once you have found someone who does know what she is doing in the area of dyeing and coloring hair, follow her instructions for maintaining your new color or dye treatment. A good stylist will give you these details without you having to ask for them.
However, if she doesn't, but you still like how your hair turned out, go ahead and ask her how to take care of your new look. After all, you're the one that pays for it, and unless your hair colorist is just in it for the money, she'll understand that and help you learn how to keep it looking good until it is time for another procedure.
