Finding a Good Pediatrician is Easy with These Tips

You understand how important having a good pediatrician is to your child's well being. However, many parents often fail to realize how time consuming finding a great pediatrician can be. Most parents choose to find a good pediatrician, based upon the recommendation of family, friends, or even co-workers. Yet, if parents don't feel comfortable with their child's pediatrician, problems may arise in the future. It is imperative that children, as well as parents, feel comfortable and confident in their choice of pediatrician to ensure the child's well being. One area where parents may feel at a total loss is when they move to a new area, are unfamiliar with their surroundings, and have not established a network of friends. For these parents, choosing a good pediatrician may seem a stroke of luck rather than one of trusted recommendation.

Here are some tips that parents can use to ensure that they have done everything in their power to find a good pediatrician, in any town.

A great way to begin narrowing your search for a great pediatrician is by running a background check on them. If a pediatrician has had disciplinary action taken against him or her, there will be a report filed with the Federation of State Medical Boards. You can visit their website at: http://www.docinfo.org/ or call them at 1-817-868-4000 to inquire about the pediatricians record.

You can also browse through the American Academy of Pediatrics to find http://www.aap.org/referral/ pediatricians that they recommend. These pediatricians have chosen to become members of the American Academy of Pediatrics. You will also want to make sure that you choose a pediatrician that is board certified.

There are certain questions that you may choose to ask the pediatrician that can help ensure that you have made the best choice. Since many pediatricians are associated with a hospital, it is a good idea to ask ahead of time for information regarding the hospital that your child would most likely be admitted to should a serious illness occur. It is also a good idea to ask if the pediatrician will attend your child if he or she is admitted to the hospital. If the pediatrician works in a practice with other physicians, you may wish to meet all of the members of the practice. Often, if your pediatrician cannot keep an appointment, one of the other members of the practice will see your child. Meeting these other pediatricians ahead of time can help avoid an uncomfortable situation should your child need to be seen by one of them.

Another important area that should be clarified before choosing your child's pediatrician includes the pediatrician's policies during weeknights and weekends. If your child becomes ill during the night or when the office is closed, you will want to make sure that the pediatrician will either be on call or able to see your child. Although the days of doctor's making house calls are long gone, many doctors do provide late hour service, or will ensure that you have access to qualified health professionals during non business hours.

Finally, you should realize that not every pediatrician will allow you the courtesy of a "free" consultation. Make sure that you ask before scheduling a time to sit down with the doctor to have your questions answered. It is best to choose a pediatrician that mirrors your own morals and personal beliefs.
