Tips for Finding the Right Online College

Mike Harris
The internet is a new, unproven medium for education. Though more colleges and universities offer online programs with a wide variety of subjects, people are still apprehensive to undertake such a huge life decision over the internet. As the online education industry grows, more illegitimate programs are introduced, increasing the apprehension of prospective students. Here are things to look out for when choosing, or even considering going through a degree program online.

1. Look at the length of establishment for the college. Although a new institution may not necessarily be bad, proven schools are often the better bet to ensure the legitimacy of the degree you plan to earn.

2. Determine whether or not the college you're looking at is accredited. The accreditation process makes sure that the education you will receive meets basic standards. It also will serve to prove that your future degree is worthwhile. For instance, if two job applicants submit the same degree from different schools, the degree from an accredited college as opposed to the unaccredited college will almost always win.

3. Figure out any extra costs or commitments of online classes. Many classes, depending on the university or college offering them, require attendance of some actual sessions or labs in order to receive credit.

4. See what kind of support is made available for students of the particular online college. If you encounter a problem, you'll be left up a creek without a paddle if there is no technical support system for the college in place. Also, see if there is access to databases that the school provides. It will make research papers and projects much easier, and improve your overall ease of education.

5. Finally, look for guidance features that your prospective online college offers. A guidance system is a key factor for transferring students, people looking for the short track to degrees, and placement in the classes that will provide with you the best educational experience possible. It is more or less vital to have a guidance feature if you want to eventually transfer to a brick and mortar school, as well.

Wading the new wealth of education opportunities is no doubt an intimidating task. The vast amount of startup and established colleges, universities, and degree programs available online makes it seem as though getting a real, legitimate post-secondary education online is a too-difficult-to-handle task. But, by analyzing schools according to the above factors, you can find the right online educational opportunity, and take full advantage of it to improve your career and lifestyle.
