Tips on Finding Something Old, Something New, Something Borrowed, Something Blue for Your Wedding

The tradition of wearing something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue for the wedding is meant to bring the bridge good luck. Each of these things are meant to represent something different in a bride's life and they can easily be incorporated into the wedding attire. The tradition is an old one, and it is still being honored today by many brides, including my wife. However, some brides have a difficult time picking out things to wear that will cover all elements of the rhyme. If you're having trouble, then here are a few tips on finding something appropriate to wear in order to follow tradition:

Something old.

This tradition symbolizes your willingness to retain connections with your family after marriage. It's a reminder of where you come from as you enter the wedding day. There are many ways you can do this. For instance, my wife had a handkerchief sewn into the lining of her wedding dress. You could also choose to wear a locket with a picture of someone in your family around your neck. This is just a sweet way to pay tribute to your family and let them know that they'll always be a part of you despite who you marry.

Something new

The tradition of wearing something new symbolizes that you are starting a new life and your love has now taken you to the next stage in your life. Many brides do this by wearing new jewelry such as earrings or a necklace, but it's important to make it something other than an engagement or wedding ring. You're wearing something new because your marriage will mark a new time in your life.

Something borrowed.

The something borrowed portion of the tradition is a way to pay tribute to the person you borrowed them from. Start off by selecting someone that has always remained near to you, such as your mother, father, or one of your grandparents. Wearing something that is borrowed lets that person know you're including them in the ceremony and that there will always be a piece of them with the new bride. The most popular way of doing this is borrowing a piece of jewelry. If you have a close friend or family member that has a special necklace, ring, or bracelet then you may want to consider borrowing this piece for the wedding day. Another creative idea is to ask your mother if you can borrow her wedding ring for the big day. This lets your mother know that you appreciate and admire their marriage and you hope your love can be as successful as your parents have been throughout the years.

Something blue.

Wearing something blue is appropriate because the color symbolizes health and happiness. These are two important attributes you must have in order to make your marriage last for a long time. Picking something out can be extremely difficult, but it can also be very fun and rewarding. For instance, before my wedding my father-in-law gave a Duke Blue Devils garter to wear underneath her dress. He did this as a joke to me because I am a Carolina Tarheels fan and Duke, his favorite team, is the rival university to Carolina. It made for a great joke when I took it off and I wish you could've seen my face when I saw it. This is your chance to be creative when using this tradition. If you're having a hard time coming up with something then you could opt for wearing a necklace that features a blue center stone.

These traditions are really just a way for the bride to show solitude and thanks for the people that are close to her. It's a great way to have fun, while honoring those around you.
