How to Present Bait to Catch More Fish

J. Motes
Here are some easy to use tips on how to fish with bait. Fishing with bait is a productive way to catch fish but using bait is different than fishing with lures. These tips will help fishermen and fisherwomen to use bait more effectively.

Tips on How to Fish With Bait - Keep the Bait Alive

Dead bait will catch fish, but in general live bait is much preferred for most fishing situations. Specially made minnow buckets, grasshopper boxes, and worm boxes can be purchased to hold bait. Anglers need to keep these containers out of direct sunlight and assure that the water or moisture levels stay as needed for their bait selection.

Tips on How to Fish With Bait - Hook to Present Bait Realistically

While fish will hit worms reeled too fast and strike minnows moving sideways in the water, it is always best to present the bait in the most realistic way possible. Baits should be hooked as gently as possible to allow the bait to survive being hooked and to move naturally in the water.

Tips on How to Fish With Bait - Cast Gently

Most bait cannot be whipped back and cast roughly like a lure. The bait can be killed from the rapid movement or simply be flung off of the hook. Bait should be carefully taken back and flung forward on the cast with a gentle movement that is accelerated as the bait moves forward. Avoid sudden jerks to the cast.

Tips on How to Fish With Bait - Add Movement

While some baits will provide movement on their own, the angler can add movement to the bait by twitching or pulling the bait and allowing it to settle into a new location. This movement can draw the attention of fish to the bait's location.

Tips on How to Fish With Bait - Add Attractant

Bait can be dressed up in a number of ways to attract more fish, here are just a few of them. A small spoon or brightly colored beads can be added above the hook to add flash while the bait is falling in the water as well as making the bait easier for fish to find on the bottom. Spray on attractant can also be used to increase the smell that the bait puts into the water. The bait cam also be rigged onto a colorful jig or bright hook.

What does a person do if she feels sorry for the bait? lol I used to live in Portage Lakes next to the St. Francis Catholic Church. Keep up the good work.
