Tips for Fishing in Lake Kissimmee

Cheryl Myers
Lake Kissimmee is Florida's third largest lake, and one of the top bass lakes in the world. It is home to speckled perch (crappies), bluegills, shellcrackers, alligators, and turtles.

Kissimmee is popular for fish camps and general fishing. Camps offer a variety of accommodations which include campgrounds, RV Parking, cabins and cottages. This is excellent for others in the family who may not want to fish, and for the fisher, as the gator hunting is always done at night. They can settle into the Western style town, visit the living history museum, shop, or dine in an old fashioned coffee or burger joint. The people are friendly in the area and can help the other tourists enjoy Kissimmee as much as the fishers do.

A vast amount of fishing facilities surround the 34 thousand acres of the lake and many of those offer everything you need; tackle, rod's, ice, drinks, pictures, and bait. A fishing license is required and you can purchase that online or through a local Wal-Mart or Kmart. Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission regulate license fees for both freshwater and saltwater fishing. The average cost for a license is around 17 dollars a person, and it is valid for 7 days. It is below the midway price for fishing licenses in the 50 states. Given Florida's year round fishing season, great diversity of fishes and abundant locations to go fishing near you, this is still one of the best recreational values around.

There are a two different ways to enjoy fishing in Kissimmee. One way is to consult a Guide service that will help you fish on your own, or you can opt to take a fishing boat boarded with trained staff.

Pastime Princess, a deep sea fishing boat, offers a 12-hour fishing trip every day. It includes all supplies, or you can bring your own, and travel anywhere from 38-78 miles per day depending on where the fish are. They provide the license to fish, so there isn't a need to buy one.

Central Florida Fishing Guide Service is an excellent choice for a one-stop source. This service provides Licensed Guides who are US Coast Guard approved Captains, with commercial boat insurance, Chauffeur's driver's licenses, and fully equipped boats. They are experts in freshwater and saltwater fishing, and will provide everything you need including hotel pickup.

Many fishermen from out of state, look at the green, shallow water and think there is not any bass to catch. This is a misconception. Even though vegetation has expanded, and the bass can hide out in that vegetation, this is the best condition to catch them.

Get a picture of everything you catch, and if you can't catch that particular size bass you had in mind, don't worry-there are other fish in the...lake.
