Fish Carefully
Ponds can be easily disturbed by the angler if they are not careful. This is more true the smaller and shallower the pond is. Anglers should stay back from the bank when casting, avoid splashing the water, and gently maneuver boats.
Go Deep
Ponds are generally shallow and anglers should fish the deeper water where the water will be cooler on hot summer days. Many ponds have old creek channels running through them which often can easily be found by lining up the existing channel on each side of the pond.
Mimic Natural Bait
An angler should observe the types of prey fish and other animals in or near the water when fishing on a pond. Many ponds have large populations of frogs and frog pattern lures can be very productive. The use of bait is a standard pond fishing tactic that produces well.
Structure
As with most other bodies of water, pond fishing should be focused on structure. Smaller fish will seek the protection of downed trees or logs, weeds, and other objects in the water and the larger fish will hang out nearby looking for a meal. Whether an angler is looking to catch bluegill, bass, or any other game fish, they are likely to be found near structure.
Gear Down
Fish in ponds are often (but certainly not always) smaller than fish found in larger bodies of water in the same area. By using smaller gear anglers can cast smaller lures as well as feel lighter bites which will result in fewer missed fish.
Experiment
The local pond is a great place to try new fishing techniques and equipment. By learning something new on trips to the local pond, the fisherman or fisherwoman will be more prepared for other fishing trips to more distant locations.
