Tips on How to Fix the Gas Gauge on Your Car

Mich Butler
If your gas gauge does not work in you do not have to guess and hope that you do not run out of gas. Fixing your gas gauge can be easier then you would suspect, especially if you have an older vehicle.

The first and best thing you can do is try to fix it. Take a look at your gas tank. It is probably in the back of the car, under the trunk, but if you have an old car that is a rear engine then it is probably in the front of the vehicle such as in the Volkswagen beetle. Now that you have located your gas tank, look for an odd thing that has wires coming off of it, or places where wires should be. That is most likely the gauge for your gas tank.

Take a look if there is no wire, but there is a spot for a wire to go. Most likely that is the problem. To find the wire that goes to the spot, slowly scan the bottom of your vehicle to see if there is a wire that is hanging somewhere. If you find one, you might need to repair it by connecting it to another piece of wire and putting a connector that will fit on the gas censer.

If the gas censor has a wire coming off of it, but the connection is wiggly take it off and close up the female and pinch the connector so that it is a bit smaller. Then force the connection back together. It should fit snugly so that you can not wiggle the wires much. A good connection will allow the electricity to flow more freely and the censor should be fixed.

Another simple thing that can be fixed rather easily is a shabby worn wire. If the wire is not in good shape there is a good chance it is grounding out somewhere other then where it is supposed to. To fix this, make sure your key is off, because you do not want to get an accidental shock. Then take a roll of electrical tape and wrap the thin or bad parts of the wires. Do not be skimpy with the tape because it can come loose, also do not put the tape on the wire if it is dirty because it will not stick for very long.

If none of these were the problem then track the wire all the way to its other end. It may be disconnected somewhere along the line or at the gas gauge itself.
