Tips on How to Fix a Slippery Clutch

If your car is revving hard, as if your clutch is pushed in, you probably have a problem with your clutch plate. Clutch plates wear out over time and need to be replaced. It can be done at home if you have the means to remove an engine. If you do not have the means to remove your engine you will either need to purchase the needed tools, or take it to a specialist.

The first thing you will need to do is consult a repair manual for the best way to replace your clutch plate. Sometimes all you need to remove the engine, besides the wrenches and screwdrivers to disconnect it from the rest of the car, is a strong floor jack and jack stands. This is true with the Volkswagen Beetle, however most vehicles need there engine to be raised up out of the hood to be removed. And then lowered in. Never lift an engine with anything other then what is recommended to remove an engine, doing so with some other device, such as a cherry picker or a tree could result in serious injury, death, and damages to your car.

Make sure you label all of your electrical wires in your car to make sure you know where they go before you remove your engine. Also make sure to remove the accelerator cable and fuel line. You can use a pencil to block off your fuel line until you are able to put your engine back in. Once you have done that. Connect the engine to what you are going to pull it out with, or firmly place the jack underneath, making sure the engine will not fall and break.

Once you have your engine out, as your repair manual suggest you should, and have it in a secure place gently use a ratcheting wrench on the outside edges of the clutch plate that hold it to the flywheel. You may need to have another wrench on the other side that keeps the engine from turning. Once you remove it. Check the flywheel to make sure it has not worn down to much and needs to be replaced as well. Take the new clutch plate you bought and install it. Remember you will need to use the little plastic thing with a ring on one side and groves on the other to position the inner part of the clutch plate. That small piece keeps your clutch plate in line so your transmission can transfer the energy properly.

Now replace your engine making sure your wires, cables and fuel lines are reconnected. If your engine continues to rev, there may be a problem with your transmission.
