Tips on Fixing Dents in Your Car

Mich Butler
Oh dear: your car just got a dent. What do you do now? Well one thing you can do is ignore it, but the dent could encourage rust making your situation worse. It would be best to try to fix it. A collision specialist is expensive. So you will most likely want to do it yourself at home. Impossible you say. I think not. I just did it with my hot rod, after some insensitive jerk kicked it. And now I am going to pass on what I know to you.

First thing you will want to do is examine the dent. If it is about the size of a quarter or smaller and deep set you will probably not be able to get it out yourself, but if you want to try I can not stop you.

The next step is locating a plunger. Yes, a plunger, like the kind you use to unclog a drain or toilet. Diseases are always present on them so I would suggest a new one. You may also want one of each. The fancy black in color ribbed like ones worked on mine. But I used a regular sink one and that seemed like it started to pull out the dent, but it could have just been an optical illusion.

Now that you have everything you need, wash the area you want to pull the dent out of. Remember you get better suction when the area is smooth, so you will want a nice clean surface when you are trying to pull out the dent.

Now that you have examined the dent, and got a plunger to fix it, it is time to pull out the dent. Look at the dent again. Try to find the best possible place to put the plunger. Make sure it is a smooth place that the plunger can connect to all over and create a large amount of suction when pulled back. Once you have done this push your plunger gently on the car then yank it back toward you as fast as you can. This probably did not work, but do not get discouraged. It took me several tries before I was able to pull out my dent. Diligence is the key when doing something like this. Try it a couple more times if it still does not work try wetting the end of the plunger. Wetting the end can help add suction. So wet the end of the plunger and go right back to work. Keep trying as the dent will not come out right away. It actually comes out bit buy bit, until it gets past a point then it snaps back into place. But be careful not to push the dent back in, or in farther when you are pushing against the car with your plunger. Remember easy in hard out. You want to pull the dent out so quick strait back movements are the best.
