Tips for a Flawless Prom Night
Stay Relaxed, Avoid Common Pitfalls, and Make the Most of Your Big Night
First the easy stuff, keep the camera and cell phone charged. The last thing that needs worrying about is a low battery at the last minute. Speaking of low battery, make sure to sleep a little extra and store up some energy. Even better, get up extra early to work out or do yoga to get an extra charge, especially if sleep is a lost cause. Dance and martial arts inspired moves are both great for balance, grace and poise. Who couldn't use some of that to inspire them on the dance floor? To keep the energy level high all day stick to fruit, veggies and protein. Avoid excessive carbs or caffeine since they can lead to energy crash. Snacking on nuts or trail mix later in the day just before the fun starts will keep the energy up to get through the pictures, travel arrangement fun, and last minute crises.
To keep hairstyle damage to a minimum, wear a button down shirt before the dress is donned. Allow plenty of time for hair and makeup, consider adding 30 minutes to your best estimate. While out picking up the floral accessories, pick up a fresh bouquet for the dressing area as a relaxation reminder. They can be dried later as a memento.
Turn on the music! Get inspired as the evening approaches. Don't forget to stash away a few essentials like breath mints, alcohol wipes, safety pins, super glue, q-tips for make-up fixes, and band aids for abused feet. Take into account after prom party activities also. If any events will be outside make sure to add bug spray and a wrap to the list. Preparedness may not seem like a sexy trait until little glitches come up. Having the means to glue a broken heel back together turns disaster into a great story and proof of complete mastery of the situation. Who isn't attracted to that?
Once underway, the first stop is dinner. This can be formal, taking advantage of the fact that everybody is already dressed to the nines, or something fun to get everyone relaxed and ready to party. Many exclusive restaurants with private group dining rooms are happy to cater prom dinners for large groups. Sushi, steak, and light Mediterranean fare are all delicious options that won't weigh anyone down. Going out for pre-prom ice cream, miniature golf, arcade adventures, or go carting for the really brave can be a lot of fun. I promise it can be done with care and the pictures will be worth it.
If a limousine is not the first thing that comes to mind, there are plenty of other options for the all important entrance to the Prom. Consider renting a hot car. Most rental agencies have Mustangs, Hummers, Luxury SUVs and many other options for a smaller prom group. Any friend or relative over 25 can rent and chauffeur for this option. It will probably cost less than you think for one night. Many people know someone with a unique car that only gets driven once a in a blue moon. Such cars are always fun and are guaranteed to stand out.
Once the dancing and glamor die down, prom night hardly has to be over. If the school doesn't have an after prom event, or even if they do and it doesn't sound that interesting, try some of these ideas to keep the fun going until the sun comes up. For a group with a lot of adrenaline, laser tag, indoor rock climbing, playground obstacle courses at the old elementary school, or ice skating will keep things exciting and make great prom pictures. Pool halls and bowling alleys also make great after prom settings, especially with the gowns and tuxes still on. Who cares if you can't bowl if you look that good doing it. If the weather is nice, bonfires, beach parties and boat rides are guaranteed to be a hit.
For a truly unforgettable Prom, consider making an entire weekend out of it and taking a road trip or going camping once the party is over. Amusement parks, beaches, tents and kitschy tourist traps will all make for prom memories lasting a lifetime.
Take chances, be spontaneous, and make sure everyone around is having fun too. If something isn't working, don't be afraid to suggest something else and make sure it happens. The best part of being prepared is the ability to be proactive and the freedom to be the life of the party.
