Tips for Frugal Grocery Shopping

M. Kaye Hash
Being frugal is not as hard as it sounds and can become a way of life. As food prices rise, frugal grocery shopping becomes important for many.

Frugal Grocery Shopping: Before You Go

Before you leave, begin your frugal grocery shopping in your home. The first step of any frugal grocery shopping trip is to make a list. Search your home for items that you are low in or out of.

Search your cabinets for "hidden" items. Frugal grocery shopping is about buying what you need. If you have canned vegetables stuck in the back of the cabinet but you cannot find them then you will probably buy more. Don't cost yourself money because you do not check your cabinets.

A frugal grocery shopping list should include opinions the family but it should not include frivolous items. If someone would like chocolate chip cookies then consider the ingredients you would need to bake your own instead of buying processed cookies or consider a different dessert that would be cheaper and not packaged. You could even find a dessert that could be frozen in single portions so you only eat what you need.

Frugal Grocery Shopping: On the Internet

A frugal grocery shopper should make a stop at the computer before leaving. The internet is a great resource for finding frugal recipes. It is even possible to find an entire frugal grocery shopping list all ready to go! Frugal meal plans are also available to help you plan your week.

The internet is also a great place to find coupons for the items you use most. This is not the time to print off all of the coupons for processed snack foods but it is a good way to try a new item without having to pay full price for it. There are many coupon sites available that you can search through or you can try visiting the website of the items you use most often.

Frugal Grocery Shopping: Plan Your Trip

Many people find that they cannot shop at only one store or that they have multiple errands to run while out. Plan your frugal grocery shopping trip before you go so that you do not spend all day going from one end of town to the other. Planning your trip will help you save gas and can help keep you on track.

Frugal Grocery Shopping: Where to Shop?

Many people shop at warehouse stores when trying to save money but these places are not always the best for the frugal grocery shopper. Will your family eat five pounds of lettuce before the lettuce goes bad? A deal is not a deal if it rots in your refrigerator.

It used to be frugal to shop the deals at several stores but with higher gas prices it may be cheaper to buy everything at one or two stores.

Frugal Grocery Shopping: At the Store

It is perhaps most important when frugal grocery shopping to keep to your list. It is not unusual to find good deals on items you use most often and should stock up on but stay away from the snack aisle and the processed foods.

It is not helpful to go to your frugal grocery shopping trip with a list if you buy a large amount of extra food. Eat before you head to the store but if you are worried about your

willpower then keep to the outside areas of the store. The inner aisles tend to hold the expensive processed food. Staying to the outside on your frugal grocery shopping trip will not only save your money but will also help your health!

Frugal Grocery Shopping: At Home

Frugal grocery shopping does not stop when you arrive home. It may seem obvious, but part of frugal grocery shopping is eating the food you bought. By not eating out you will save money and will be eating healthier food.

Keep a list on the fridge to write down items you are low in or run out of before your next frugal grocery shopping trip. Also important is to find the items your family does and does not eat. If no one likes raisins then find a different fruit they do like instead of buying and wasting boxes of items that go to waste.

Frugal grocery shopping takes planning but can help you save money. You may even find that frugal grocery shopping becomes a way of life and not just something you do when your checking account is low!

Also make sure you eat before you go shopping. Shopping hungry's always a bad move. Well done.

I have been doing most of these. I do need to empty my food cupboards and get them in order again. You are so correct about the wholesale clubs. For years we have gone to one once a month. This past year we realized that it was no longer a money saver especially because the closest one is nearly an hour away. This is a very helpful article.

Great tips! I agree that it may not be economical to drive around just to save a few cents- gas prices aren't what they used to be!
