1. Establish credibility. People want to give to organizations that are credible and have an outstanding reputation. The more trust you build the more comfortable a person will be to give you their money. You may use references or give access to the accounting records of your fundraising organization.
2. Show in detail where the funds are going to be allocated. For instance will the money go to people building a shelter or to a scientific research staff. The more details you give the potential donor the more clear they will be on what the money is going toward.
3. Appeal to the potential donor's self interest. Explain all the benefits that their donation will bring to them and to society at large. Make them feel like they are part of something larger than themselves. People will give to you when something inside them compels them to. People are largely motivated for self reward.
4. Give the donor something in return. This can be as small as a sticker or as large as putting their name on a new building. Donors enjoy the recognition that they get from offering something back to society.
5. Show how much others have given to you. Many charity drives have a live figure in regards to how much people are giving. You may have a goal to reach a million dollars and you just need a few more donations to reach your goal. This is a motivating factor for the person who is considering donating.
6. Get others involved. People want to feel like they are a part of something bigger than themselves. You could set up a marathon or a bake sale for your fundraising campaign. You can set up events where the whole family can get involved.
7. You can accept non-cash items such as items that people are willing to give away. This may be in the form of clothing, appliances, food stuff, or various services. There are many out there who would rather donate their item to charity than to take the time to learn how to sell it on Ebay.
8. Maintain a directory of those who donated in the past. If they donated before there is a good chance that they will donate again. Build a positive lasting relationship with your donor base and you will reap the rewards.
