Planning for your funeral ahead of time is a very smart thing to do. It not only gives you time to make thoughtful decisions on the type of funeral that you want, it will also allow you to shop around and find the best funeral provider. It will also spare your family the stress of making decisions at a very emotional time. Her are some tips for funeral pre-planning.

1) Casket Shopping - You can save a lot of money on a casket by buying one from a casket store instead of a funeral home. The funeral home providing your funeral services must accept the casket you have chosen. It is the law that they accept it. You can locate casket stores in your area b going to www.casketstores.com and then click on store directory.

2) Compare the providers - Choosing a quality funeral provider is you're most important step in the funeral pre-planning process. It is wise to talk with several funeral homes. So that you can compare the different prices and services that they offer. It is a federal law that funeral directors provide you with an itemized list of all the products and services they provide. Make sure to ask for it and read over it very carefully.

3) Prepay or not - Just because you pre plan your funeral it does not mean you have to prepay. Before you pay or sign anything there are some things you need to make sure you know.

A) Be sure that you know exactly what you are paying for. Get an itemized price list and compare it other funeral homes before you commit to anything.

B) Find out if the prices are locked in or will there be an additional payment requested at the time of death.

C) Find out what happens if you move to a different area, or die while you are away from home.

D) Can you cancel the contract and get your money back if you happen to change your mind?

E) If you decide you want to prepay get all of the details of the agreement in writing. Have the funeral director sign it, then give copies to your family so they know what is planned.

Even though this is a subject none of us want to think about, funeral pre-planning is something that is very important to do. Don't leave all the stress and expense on your loved ones. They will appreciate very much not having to worry about this at a time when they are very emotional.
