Before you go to bed, try to relax. A lot of people let worries and anxieties take over their mind right before they go to bed. Some people are thinking about what they have to do the next day. Let all of that go. Clear your mind, pretend that nothing is going on in your life. I know it is easier said than done, but tomorrow is another day and you need sleep to be able to have a better handle on whatever is going on in your life. Take a hot bath before bed or listen to some relaxing music on the radio.
Try to stay busy or active during the day. If you are idle for most of the day and are not active at all, you may have a harder time trying to fall asleep or stay asleep at night. It is best to exercise in the morning, because exercise can energize you and keep you up. Keep moving throughout the day so that at night time you will be ready for bed.
Stay away from caffeine. If you have trouble sleeping, try cutting caffeine out of your diet completely. If you don't want to cut it completely, try to at least limit your caffeine intake and take anything with caffeine unless it is in the morning or very early afternoon.
Reading can help you fall asleep. I would say try reading something boring or dull and that might just put you to sleep, but even reading any book or magazine before bed can help relax you, take your mind off of your worries and help you to focus on something else. That may help to soothe your mind and help you to drift off more peacefully.
Do not go to bed angry. Going to bed mad can break up your sleep. If you have an unresolved issue with someone, especially your spouse, try to see if you can make up with them before going to bed. Anger can raise your heart rate and blood pressure. It can also make you keep thinking about the person or reason why you are angry and make it difficult for you to sleep without making peace.
Eat something close to bedtime or at least make sure you are not hungry. There have many times I had trouble falling asleep and couldn't figure out why. Then I would hear my stomach growling and realized that it was telling me something. Hunger can keep you awake. Make sure to eat but do not too heavy before going to bed. Eat something like a snack if you are hungry.
If your bedroom is too hot or too cold, you might have trouble sleeping. I have trouble sleeping when it is too hot out. I toss and turn all night and can't get comfortable. Use a fan or window air conditioner if you do not have central air. Try to keep your bedroom at a comfortable temperature or pile on some blankets if it is too cold.
Don't sleep with the television or lights on. Turn off the television and the lights and darken the room. A darker room will give you a sounder sleep because there is no distractions.
