Tips for Getting a Driver's License in India

Anyone looking to get a driver's license in India needs to be at least 18 years old. This is a bit older than in the United States, where you can get a restricted driver's license at the age of 15. A driver's license in India is considered as proof of identity, similar to the United States. There are 2 ways to get a driver's license in India, either by the officials or through an agent.

Similar to other countries, you do need a driver's license in India in order to drive. The Indian government issues the driver's license through a Regional Transport Office (RTO). These Regional Transport Offices are located at the district offices in each state. It is not any more difficult to get a driver's license in India, than anywhere else. To get driver's license in India, you are required to be physically able to pass the driver's license test. Similar to the United States, there are different types of driver's licenses that you need to have to drive certain types of vehicles. To get a driving license in India, you first must have gotten a Learner's license. Here are some other tips that will help you get driver's license in India.

You first must have your Learner's permit to drive, and then you can apply for a driver's license in India. The Learner's license has to be submitted to a Regional Transport Office in order to be eligible for a permanent driver's license in India.

Also, a medical fitness certificate is required prior to getting a permanent driver's license in India. Many times people forget the essential medical documents that are needed to get a driver's license in India, but as a convenience, you can medical fitness certificate without having an actual checkup at a doctor's office. You can get your medical fitness certificate from any doctor in the area. The doctors are quite easy to find, at times they will be sitting at a table near the Regional Transport Office as a convenience. If you are in need of a medical fitness certification you can visit one of these doctor's and they will fill out the necessary form for you to take to get your driver's license in India.

At times as with many driver's license offices, getting your license can be time consuming going through a Regional Transport Office. To save time, you can opt out of going to the Regional Transport Office and see an agent to get your driver's license in India. These agents work with officers from the Regional Transport Offices. The agents charge you a little more money for your driver's license in India. In order to get a Learner's license you have to pay the agent's fees and provide the necessary documents. The agent will then give you a driver's license without facing the Regional Transport Officer and saving you a little time.

In addition to a learner's permit and a medical certificate, you will also have to take a driver's test in order to get a permanent driver's license in India. The Regional Transit Officer is the one who conducts the driving exam. In addition, similar to the United States, you must have all the necessary documents in regards to the vehicle you're using to take the exam. If you do not have your own vehicle, it will not stop you from being able to take the exam; however, the Regional Transit Officer or agent will charge some extra fees.

The best and easiest way to get driver's license in India is to attend a driving school or take a driver's education course. After successfully completing the driving course, you can get you driver's license from the school. By taking a course, it will save not only time and possibly extra fees, but it will also prepare you to be the best driver you can be in India.

    This article is great if a person wishing to get a licence the "legal" way. Most persons will just pay a "tout" who will arrange for a licence for you without having to do a test. More and more of these licences are showing up in Canada. They have faked DTO officer signatures, or lasered copies they try and pass off to officials in Canada.

    When I lived abroad (in Germany) I had an International license. There were laws, such as the Good Samaritan Law, that required you to stop and assist in accidents. We had to carry a first aid kit in our cars at all times. You would think that America would enforce something along those lines. Everyone is afraid of getting sued I suppose. Good article. cheers.
