Hiring employees often taxes a magazine's financial resources, because of the increasing cost of health benefits. Freelance writers are sometimes preferred over even part-time employees, since it's financially beneficial for both parties; the magazine saves money by hiring writers on a per-article basis, and the writers have another article to add to their portfolio.
Thanks to recent developments in mobile communication within the last few years (such as bluetooth capabilities for laptops), freelance writers are able to write their articles from virtually anywhere in the world and email them to the magazine. Because of this, it's also an increasingly competitive field. Here are a few things to keep in mind when trying to submit your article or query to a magazine:
First, realize the value of your work. A lot of writers will submit their article for free, or at a greatly reduced price because they value the byline over the money. While this is admirable, it's a good idea to remember that the magazine will be making even more money than you will for the article, even if you do submit it for free. By valuing your work, you're asking the magazine to respect you. (There are, of course, exceptions to every rule. If you're writing for a non-profit organization or other cause you feel strongly about, money may not even be a motivating factor.)
This should go without saying, but deadlines are the single most important factor for magazines, especially weekly publications. Respect these deadlines and organize your work accordingly. If need be, go over the article several times to make sure its content and format are exactly what they want.
Don't pester the editor with relentless queries, but always listen to their advice and read the submission guidelines. If you're unable to meet with the editor directly, always try to connect with them regularly over the phone or internet. Editors like to know what you're doing, and they'll appreciate being updated on the situation.
Freelance writing isn't for everyone, but if you feel you have what it takes, then you'll likely be more at home in the profession than others.
