Ready to Get Your Nails Done?

Many women love getting their nails done. I haven't seen my actual nails in over a year! But there are some things you should know before giving your hands and feet a treat:

Make sure your hands and feet are in good condition:
If you have any cuts or infections, don't get your nails done. It's not sanitary for the nail salon, and you risk further irritating or infecting yourself. Come back in a week or two after your wounds are healed.

Be sure to explain to your nail tech what you want:
Nail treatments vary - some include massages, aromatherapy and painted designs. But extras come at a cost. If you just want a basic manicure or pedicure, make sure you explain that.

If you tend to chip paint easily, bring your own polish:
If your nails chip easily from everyday wear, bring your own nail polish so you can touch up on the chips at home. This will save you money since you won't have to run back to the salon for a touch up.

Make sure your salon is properly licensed and that they follow sanitary procedures:
Look around and be sure that everything they use is being sterilized. That includes the tub the wash your feet in to the file they shape your nails with. Everything should always be properly sterilized. If you suspect your salon is not following procedures do not get your nails done, leave and call your health department right away. If you feel more comfortable with it, b ring your own tools for the technician to use.

If you are after a pedicure, wear flip-flops:
If you're getting a pedicure you'll want to wear flip flops so you don't smudge the polish. Remember that accidents will happen, so make sure you are wearing a cheap pair of flops in case you get polish on them or something of that nature.

Wear proper pants/shorts:
If you're going to get a pedicure, make sure that you wear pants that can be rolled up to at least your knee. Typically you get a partial leg massage while you get a pedicure and you don't want your pants in the way. You can also wear shorts to solve this problem.

Allow for drying time:
Make sure you dry completely before walking or picking up anything. You do not want to smudge your polish. This wastes your time as well as your techs. Allow at least 10 minutes to dry completely if you drying in front of a fan. If you have your hands under the ultra violet lights, you should only need 5-6 minutes. If you are unsure, ask your tech if it is time.

Tip appropriately:
Tip your manicurist or pedicurist approximately 10 to 20 percent. Feel free to give more if their work was exceptional. They will appreciate it and they will be more likely to take their time and do things right the next time you come around for a fill-in.
