Never fill up the bathtub or turn the water on with your pet in it. Fill up the vessel you plan to bathe your pet in before bringing your pet to it to get a bath. This will reduce the amount of fear and stress that is put upon your pet and could lead to a much better outcome and a positive bath experience. Always use warm water when giving your pet cat a bath, never put them through the torture of using only cold water. How would it feel if you were given a cold water bath?
One method that will save a pet owner from dangerous cat claws is to wrap up each of the cat's paws with a small cloth or baby sock. Using medical tape, tighten the cloth onto your pet's arm so that it cannot slip off during the bath.
Speak to your cat in the same soft voice you have used to soothe it in the past. Some cats are soothed by noises other than talking, like kissing sounds, or clicks. If none of this is working, try holding your pet close and mimic the purring sound the cat makes when it is at its most content.
Keep a firm but gentle hold on your pet cat or kitten by picking it up by the skin on the back of its neck like a mother cat would do. Do not attempt to pick your pet cat or kitten up this way if they are overweight; it could hurt them more than help. In time they will realize that they cannot go anywhere and will begin to calm down. Some cats will even get used to having a bath if it becomes part of their routine.
When your cat or kitten is clean and the bath is over, take the time to cuddle the frightened feline in a warm towel, don't just let it escape to its hiding spot still wet and afraid.
