Tips to Go Green with Your Holiday Season Travel Plans
What's the greenest form of holiday travel? Unbelievably, bus or train is the greenest way to travel. Passengers who travel by bus or train consume the least amount of carbon. During the winter, roads will close due to winter weather, which causes delays. It's also a good idea to travel by bus or train because they drop you off downtown in the city you are visiting. Making you have easier access to the place you need to stay.
Shop and ship from online. Don't worry about getting gifts to family and friends in time for the holiday. Shop online and have it shipped straight to their door. Packing gifts in your car cuts down on good gas mileage. Not to mention packing gifts in your luggage will leave less space for clothing or other important items. Shopping and shipping from online saves hassles. It also saves delays in your arrival from winter weather.
Go paperless when traveling this holiday. With technology today, you can go paperless and be green. Don't print boarding passes until you reach the airport. This cuts down on paper waste. If driving to your destination enter directions into a GPS, no paper and gives turn-by-turn directions. Have travel receipts emailed instead of printed or faxed.
Refill used travel containers. Instead of continually buying travel shampoo and conditioners, refill the container with shampoo and conditioner from home. Use a small funnel to refill.
If traveling by car during Thanksgiving and Christmas prepare your car. Pre-trip car maintenance optimizes your gas mileage. This means checking your motor oil and tire pressure, removing unnecessary baggage that weighs your car down. Pre-trip maintenance on your car will prevent most breakdowns along major highways.
Recycle while you stay at the hotel. Bring a separate bag to put plastic, paper and metal in to recycle before you leave. Place in recycle bins before you eave for home.
Monitor the thermostat at home and in the hotel. Keeping the thermostat at a certain degree saves energy and money. Just a 2-degree temperature change results in 2,000 pounds of carbon dioxide emissions.
