Tips for Going on Cruises with Children

How To Make Sure the Whole Family Has Fun

John Galt
For those who love to travel, the possibilities are virtually endless. From mountain climbing to seeing the sights of the ancient world, nearly everything offers an opportunity for enjoyment. However, for those who love traveling and have children, especially younger children, the possibilities are somewhat limited. This is not to say that families cannot have a great time going on vacation together, but rather that some trips are better suited for families than others. However, one type of vacation that can be enjoyed equally be very member of the family is the cruise. Regardless of age, families can feel safe bringing their children on a cruise with them. However, there are definitely a few things that should be considered and remembered before making the trip, and following these few tips can make all the difference in the world.

Definitely the first and most important thing that should be done before bringing a child on a cruise ship is to actually contact the cruise line. While the majority of cruise lines are very catering to Children, you will find that not all cruise lines are that friendly. In order to find out what services different cruise lines offer, the single best thing to do is to contact them. A representative for the cruise line should be able to let you know if the line offers special programs or daycare services for children. Another important thing to ask about is the type of foods that will be available. Remember that children can be very picky eaters, and it is important to make sure that you will be able to feed your children over the long voyage.

Perhaps this is a good opportunity to offer a few words of caution: If the cruise line accepts children, but does not offer any special programs or play-areas, you may want to consider going with another line. Although children can be a joy to travel with, very few kids appreciate relaxation, and if the cruise line does not offer enough to hold their attention, you are going to spend the majority of your time entertaining your child. Of course, this is not by any means a negative thing, but it is something to think about before you book your vacation.

Remember to bring plenty of accessories and toys with you if you plan to travel. Although most children like cruises, many do not, and if being out on the boat scares them, you are going to want to have plenty of activities for them to participate in inside the room.

Another important thing to do before actually going on the trip is to consult with your child's doctor. Even though few children really do get seasick, you need to make sure you are prepared in case you happen to have one of the children do. Remember that adult-dose seasickness medication is not going to be effective or safe for children, and that your doctor is going to be able to provide you with effective medicine and the right methods to use it.

Of course, this should go without saying, but make sure that you always keep a careful watch on your child. It can be all too easy for a child to try and slip away during a pool-side nap or other relaxing activity. For that reason, you must always remember to be careful. When putting your child into one of the ship's playgroups or daycare programs, you may want to observe the program first in order to make sure that they are treating your child in the way in which you would like them to be treated. Also, a majority of cruise lines offer some way to get in contact with the parents in case of an emergency, many do this via cell phone, so remember to keep your phone charged and on at all points when your child is in care.

There can be no arguing that traveling with children presents some unique difficulties. However, the rewards for taking a trip with your child are almost unlimited, and you can form memories that will last a lifetime. Remember to take the time and prepare carefully, you will find that traveling with your child is a joy, you simply need to take the right steps prior to actually leaving, and cruises also require their own special types of preparation. Follow the simple tips outlined in this article, and you will find yourself having a very enjoyable and very meaningful cruise to the destination of your choice.
