Health is important to us all. Good health is vital. We all try to listen to our doctors. If we are slightly overweight to morbidly obsess, our health care practitioners harp on it. We are taught ways to prevent heart disease or prescribed medication. We are encouraged to have yearly physicals. I am for all of this... and more. How often does our medical doctor encourage us to see a dentist? On a regular basis?

Were you aware that there are now links between gum disease and some types of cancer (kidney, blood, lung, and pancreas)? Now I understand why when my friend's father underwent hip replacement surgery, he had to go see his dentist first for an all clear.

Is it as simple as going to the dentist for a cleaning and a check up twice a year (and just how many of us actually do that on a regular basis?)

Are there additional steps that could aid in the prevention of health problems as well as increasing our overall health? Remember Mary Tyler Moore could turn the world on with her smile? Just imagine what we could do, if we all smiled and meant it more.

When it comes to gum care, pink is best, red is bad. By flossing daily, we can keep our gums healthy and avoid unsightly gum inflammation. Flossing reduces both bacteria and inflammation on our mouths... opt for the floss you prefer best (go ahead and try as many out as you need) as you will tend to floss more. Your smile and your health will be appreciative.

Okay no gum smacking... that really is one of the most annoying habits to ever exhibit. Nevertheless, gum chewing is a surefire way to fight plaque. Build up your immune defenses with vitamins C and D. Enjoy a glass of milk and an orange for breakfast. Do not forget to take a multi- vitamin as well. Vitamin D can reduce inflammation and a lack of Vitamin C can lead to gum disease.

Be neutral... well not really. However, by eating plenty of alkaline foods such as bananas, green vegetables, and almonds, bacterial germs can be neutralized. Coffee can be very acidic, switch to tea.
