In the past twenty or more years since most new grandparents have raised their own children many commonly practiced actions have been discovered to be harmful or detrimental to babies and small children. Also many parents are reading books and articles written by doctors and experts that can be contrary to what many new grandparents were taught when their children were young.

Some general infant care and safety is somewhat different from twenty years ago; people are living longer and technology is changing everyday life, the days of new moms calling their mothers for advice daily is on a decline and many new grandparents may feel out of place or put out.

Get Into Grand-parenting in the 21^st Century

Just because new parents get most of their advice from books and doctors instead of dear old mom (or dad) is no reason for new grandparents to feel uninvolved; they can take the proactive approach, read the same books, go on the hospital tours before the baby is born, go to the new born class with mom and dad at the hospital, read those magazine articles the new parents are talking about.

Many of the popular pregnancy, birth, and child care books are written by doctors and will have some sound advice in them; reading these can give insight to new grandparents as to why exactly the new parents don't want the baby to have the treasured twenty year old twenty bear, the grandparents saved away all those years.

The hospital tour will give the soon to be grandparents and parents to be a chance to see the hospital, the nursery, and the recovery rooms before the chaos of the much anticipated birthday; many hospitals even offer grand-parenting classes to help new grandparents learn the latest safety risks, prevention, and other useful information grandparents would be interested in.

The newborn class offered by most hospitals is given every weekday, and the parents will get to give the newborn their first bath; they also talk about safety and general infant care instructions, this is a great opportunity for grandparents to get involved and help a tired new parents feel more at their feet with this, many new parents are nervous about caring for their babies the first few weeks or longer.

Many magazines specializing in parenting will give free subscriptions to new parents and new grandparents; these magazines have monthly additions covering modern subjects that parents are interested in. Being able to discuss which infant carriers are easiest on a mother's back or always knowing the hottest age appropriate toys will be a real advantage to any grand parent.

Remembering that now babies need to be put to sleep on their back, need to be in a rear facing car seat until one year and (not or) twenty pounds, and all the other new baby "rules" can be daunting, especially when many new grandparents did not take any of those precautions and their children are still alive to tell the tale. Taking an active interest is the very best way to be a grandparent, every parent would appreciate another partner to help raise healthy, happy, children.
