Road trips can be a blast but to prevent a disaster here are some things to know.
If you want to see this country's variety that's available, meet all sorts of people, visit all sorts of places, there's no better way to do that then to travel by car. Yes, airplanes will get us where we want to go faster but driving allows you to see the country. The following tips will help you get the most out of your journey.
1. Estimate your expenses
Gas is expensive nowadays and probably will remain high so plan ahead. You can figure out roughly how big a bite of gas will take out of your pocket by using a fuel-cost calculator available on the Internet. You can visit places such as www.fuelcostcalculator.aaa.com. You can add in what you expect to pay for food and hotels and see if the total is what you can live within your budget. It is very important to figure out just how much gas you will spend because this may be your biggest expense.
2. Get your car ready for the road
The greatest fear and disappointment is that your car will fail you while you're on the road. If you're going on a multiple-day journey be sure you take your car to a reliable mechanic before you take it on the road. Be sure he or she checks the following: Check the oil level, tire pressure, tire wear, including the spare tires, replace wipers or at least have an extra pair in the car, an extra spare, check the belts, battery, and all fluids.
3. Make sure you have Roadside assistance
Despite all the precautions you take before you hit the road, be sure you have roadside assistance as a back-up. This is very important if you have any type of car but especially if you have an older vehicle. Roadside assistance can be a Godsend especially when you are stuck on the side of the road; assistance comes quick and is a welcome relief. The best and most reliable roadside assistance is AAA. If you have a newer car, check to see if you have roadside assistance through your insurer or the dealership. Either way, be sure you have a toll-free number of your assistance provider at hand in case the need arises.
