Tips on Having a Garden Full of Carnivorous Plants

Little Shop of Horrors in Your Home?

We've all seen the comedy movie "Little Shop of Horrors" where the carnivorous plant eats people. But, what if you could grow a wide variety of different carnivorous plants in your home? Well, I love gardening and thought it would be fun to grow my own garden.

I decided to start with a kit by Dune Craft called Carnivorous Creations to see just how easy it was to grow and maintain a garden of this odd nature and how much care was involved. I have decided to share my findings with you in this article. Who knows, maybe this will be your next garden idea.

Garden of Carnivorous Plants: What Seeds Come With this Product?

The Venus Fly Trap, also known as Dionaea muscipula, is probably the most talked about carnivorous plant you can get and yes it will be in this garden. Perhaps one of the reasons it is so popular is because it is the easiest to germinate and grow. They have a sweet odor which is what attracts insects to them.

The Cobra Plant, or Darlingtonia Californica, is an attractive plant. The funnel shape is very pretty to look at as the light seems to go right through it. The 'hood' like portion that droops over the top of the cone shape hides a snake like tongue (which is actually a leaf) and is the factor that ultimately gave this plant its name. This plant eats bugs that crawl inside because the hood will confuse its prey into thinking that there is no way out.

Sundew Plants are an interesting carnivorous species to contain in your garden. They are covered in hairs that reflect light because of the liquid that they secrete. When insects come closer they often mistake the liquid to be nectar when in reality it is a natural glue. The more the prey struggles the more it suffocates.

There is also a variety of Trumpet and Pitcher Plants that come with this garden. These guys have cone shaped leaves and a slippery nectar so when bugs come inside to eat from the plant it slips down deep and can not come back up to escape.

Garden of Carnivorous Plants: An All Around Cool Garden

After the germination period the plants begin to grow. It really is quite fascinating to say the least. This could be the perfect gift for the garden freak in your life. It certainly will keep them busy and captivated by the amazing way these carnivorous plants live.

These garden kits sell for around $13.00 and so far have been a lot of fun. We keep the dome lid off for an hour or two every few days and it seems as though all the flies, mosquitoes and other pests are drawn to them so they keep our home very clean. The only words of advice I have to share is to be sure an follow the directions as far as watering and such. The carnivorous garden is a superb hobby for anyone who loves gardening.
