Tips on Having the Safest and Ultimate Mountain Biking Experience in the Fall

Pam Parent
Autumn is a great time to enjoy the ultimate mountain biking experience. There are less bikers on trails in autumn, which allows for a more enjoyable ride. The autumn air is crisp, and the vibrant colors make the mountain biking experience even more enjoyable. The proper equipment, clothes and fall riding tips can keep you safe while mountain biking in the fall.

Gear Needed for a Fall Mountain Biking Experience

Bring a spare tube, pump and tire tools. Paths are often covered with fall leaves, which can cover objects that may puncture a tire. A tire blowout will only temporarily halt the fall mountain biking experience if you're prepared. Have a first aid kit available in case of injury, and also bring an EpiPen if you are allergic to bees. Yellow jacket wasps can be troublesome during the fall months, and a biker needs to be prepared and cautious. Also pack a compass, cell phone and flashlights.

Clothes and Food for Mountain Biking in the Fall

Weather can change quickly in the fall. Before heading out to enjoy a fall day of mountain biking, make sure to pack an extra jacket, and extra layers of clothing. Spare socks and mountain biking gloves will come in handy on a crisp, cool autumn day. Pack plenty of water and healthy snack to keep hydrated and energy up.

Safety Tips for Mountain Biking in the Fall

Always tell someone the route or place where you will be mountain biking. This is especially important because in fall, light nights soon turn to dark afternoons. If a biker gets hurt or lost it will be especially helpful to those searching in less daylight hours. Also, if traveling through the woods, there may be hunters depending on the trail, state, and time of fall your mountain biking. Wear an orange vest, or put some reflective tape on the coat or sweater you are wearing. This will make a biker more visible. If you get lost, have flashlights or bike lights on hand to help people locate you.
