Tips for Having a Wedding in a Historical Place

Kristi Patrice Carter
Getting married in a historical hotel will be a treat for you as well as your guests. This theme allows for fascinating décor and a captivating wardrobe. You and your guests will feel as if you have traveled back in time. In order to truly take advantage of all the hotel has to offer when it comes to planning your wedding, you should incorporate the era into every aspect of the details, from the wedding cake all the way down to the invitations.

Step 1

Research historic hotels in your desired location. Schedule a day to visit a few different hotels to see which one would best suit your needs. Be sure get a list of prices from each one to determine how much they will charge by the hour to hold your wedding and reception and how far in advance you will need to reserve it. This will help you in narrowing down the choices.

Step 2

Decide to whether to have the wedding indoors or outside. While historic hotels are generally gorgeous and elaborate on the inside, you shouldn't forget the possibility of an outdoor wedding. Many historic hotels have breathtaking gardens that are in full bloom during the spring or summer months. Even if you have your wedding outside, you can still take full advantage of the hotel's interior by having the reception inside in a banquet room.

Step 3

Use the historical décor to your advantage. You can save money when holding a wedding at a historical hotel because little is needed for decoration. If the wedding is held outside, you might need to rent chairs and chair coverings, but for the most part, the hotel is already decked out. It would also be a good idea to use candles for most the lighting to really bring out the historic element.

Step 4

Plan a menu catering towards Victorian times. If you are having an informal wedding, a wedding day brunch complete with petit fours, fruit, and scones would highlight the time era. If you are having a traditional wedding and prefer a sit-down dinner, you can offer foods such as hand-rolled chicken kiev, a wild rice pilaf, oyster stew, wedding cake, and coffee. It is important to keep in mind what foods were readily available during that time period to really adhere to the theme. For modern day Victorian cake designs, visit Planning the Perfect Wedding Day. See Resources for link.

Step 5

Send out invitations that have historical flair. You might want to design invitations yourself that include a watermark image of the hotel itself on the background. The invitation should appear to be elegant and timeless.
