Tips for Healthy Digestion

Sarah Rachel
After I had emergency surgery to have my gallbladder removed I've suffered from poor digestion. Even though I was in extreme pain from the gallbladder attacks it seems as though other things have gone wrong since I've been without this tiny organ. In my case I had no choice- my gallbladder had to be removed. For some reason when I got pregnant with my first son in 2005, I started to have severe gallbladder attacks. The attacks were painful and they became more frequent. At one point I had an attack so severe that I developed gallstone pancreatitis, which was the reason why I had to have my gallbladder removed once and for all. After the surgery my digestion became very poor, and I had to do things to help restore my digestive health. Here is a list of things you can do to change your digestion for the better.

1). Eat a healthy Diet- First of all you can benefit the most by eating a healthy diet rich in fiber and other lean protein sources such as turkey, chicken and fish, preferably organic. It is actually much better for your metabolism and your digestion if you eat smaller meals more frequently.

2). Water- Drink 8 to 10 glasses of purified water each day. Avoid drinking tap water.

3). Enzymes- Taking an enzyme supplement before each meal can help to curb digestive upsets because these enzymes will help you digest your food. Some of the best digestive enzymes are protease, lipase, and amylase.

4). Get Tested for food allergies- Some digestive problems are due to un known food allergies. Be sure to see a Naturopathic doctor to get tested for food allergies, and if you have any avoid those offending foods.

5). Whole-Food Probiotics. Probiotics are basically flora also known as beneficial bacteria that help to keep us healthy. They eat up the bad bacteria and help to boost our immune system.

6). Colonics- While many people in the medical community frown upon colonics some Natural doctors swear by them as a way to help keep the colon healthy. A colonic is also called hydrotherapy or colonic irrigation. Water is infused into the rectum by a colon therapist. The water then flushes out old waste which was stuck to the colon walls. I urge you to do your own research in regard to the matter and make the best choice for you. There is conflicting information on both sides of the coin, but personally I tend to favor the more natural approach just from what I've seen with my own two eyes. I think its best to have it done by a professional rather than doing it yourself at home though. I have never had a colonic myself, but I wanted to list this as a possible method to help restore good digestion because I've had family and friends who have experienced great results from it.
