Tip 1- It's all about the tools. You must have the right tools in order to create the right look. Use ultra fine toothed trimmers for precision cuts. Use "T" style blades to make small details much easier. You can use wider, more aggressive trimmer tooth designs leave softer edges and fuzzier lines. Narrower blades make cutting behind the ear simple. It is also very important to use a fine tooth comb to catch all the "baby" hairs while you are cutting.
Tip 2- What degree do you have? The position and angle of the trimmer blade relative to the scalp makes a big difference between creating a crisp cut and one that looks days old. Look at the client's unique growth pattern and direction and adjust your angle accordingly. This takes practice and a steady hand. Notice your angle while you are cutting hair to train your eye better. Also keeping your elbows raised up and even will help you cut with an even angle.
Tip 3- Best kept secret. While you are cutting the hair, scoot the scalp slightly when using clippers. By applying tension to the scalp can help you achieve the results your want. Use your thumb on the other hand to make these adjustments. You can also apply pressure with a fine tooth comb.
Tip 4- Man in the mirror. Using your station mirror is one of your most powerful cutting tools. Complete one side and turn it to the mirror. Stand at the opposite side. Now you can see two sides and once and get them both the same. Always use the mirror as your guide. Additionally, make sure your client isn't crossing their legs or ankles. This could result in a very uneven cut.
Tip 5- Cleaning day. It is very important to take care of your tools. Tools and expensive and they need regular maintenance just like the car you drive. You cannot create clean and crisp lines without smooth running tools. Oil your clipper every client. It is a law to use sanitizing sprays, but using a multi function, sanitizing spray will help you in your daily tool maintenance. A good one to try is Andis Cool care 5inONE.
By using these clipper cutting tips, you can deliver precision cuts your clients and keep them coming to your for years to come.
