Let's face it. Most of the time vacations are built around the needs and interests of the children. Keeping them happy helps everyone have a good time. This usually works out OK. The problem is that sometimes I wondered how much my husband and I could enjoy the fun. We worked hard to find ways to make that happen.
Here are our tips to help parents have fun on summer vacation.
When choosing a destination it's OK keep your interests in mind. Our daughters enjoy trains. My husband could live in a train yard and be happy for hours. When you think about trains and children places like zoos and amusement parks come to mind.
We tried blending everyone's interests by going on a steam train excursion. To our delight the kids had a great time. My husband and I were able to feed our interests. The kids got to meet the conductor while seeing a working train up close.
Babysitting would have been nice to have when the kids were very young. Did you know that places like Walt Disney World and some resorts offer this service? Picking a destination with this service definitely helps parents have more fun on a vacation. Plus, it has the added benefit of letting the kids play with other children their age.
Friends of ours took a trusted teenager on vacation with them. She helped with the kids and babysat them two nights of the vacation. For the cost of spending money and meals for the teens our friends were able to have a good time on their trip. Be sure that all details are worked out first so the teen clearly knows what responsibilities to expect.
Let the kids go to the grandparents for a few days. This can let parents have a worry free vacation. Be prepared that the kids may not want to leave Grandma's house when you want to pick them up.
Trade with friends that you trust. Their children can come to your house while their parents are away. Your kids can go to theirs. The parents win and the kids have extra time with their favorite playmates. Don't forget the joys of summer camp. This is one of my favorite tips to help parents have a fun summer vacation. The kids get to have a vacation getaway. Why not take yours then too?
