We know them; we utilize them: make up, hair, clothes..., some of us even take it a step further- eat right, and maintain an exercise regime. (I am not one of them, sadly.)
Nevertheless, how many of us have really listened to the voice inside our head... or Sally Field on national television?
What can we do to prevent osteoporosis in additional to taking that once a month Boniva pill?
Listen to your mother... she still knows best
Do you know that milk ad campaign--- 'it does a body good'? I just bet a mother came up with that slogan. It is so true and how many of us can recall our mothers and now us as mothers ourselves, being instructed to consume more milk as it is good for us. Now we are the ones instructing the next generation with the same advice. Drink it- it is good for you. Turns out, the same goes for adulthood. We are never too old to drink milk and not have it be beneficial to us. Consume calcium rich food as a way to help prevent future osteoporosis. The prevention can be double whammed by also taking a calcium supplement daily. Should you want to change your diet but still fight osteoporosis, you can alternative regular low fat milk with soy milk. It provides as much calcium as regular milk.
Again, listen to your mom, well, my mom... "Walking is good."
Daily walks can solidify our bones. Contracting muscles can stimulate bone growth, ergo; walking is good. Thanks, Mom! I always knew you were looking out for me. No one needs to cram in an hour of daily walking to prevent osteoporosis: walking just fifteen minutes a day thwarts bone loss up to seven years longer than what is typical. Fifteen minutes. I am off and walking now, I tell you.
One time, mom may be a bit off with her advice- good posture is not always good for us
Do you spend hours each day sitting in chair whilst as work? How many of us were taught to sit up straight? Can you hear your mom's voice right now, as you read this? I know I can, as I have become her verbatim when talking to my children. However, sitting straight backed all day everyday can create bone-weakening stress on our spines. Rather, continue to keep your shoulders back (there is her voice, again), but, in addition, lean slightly backward in your chair instead.
Listen to your doctor--- who listened to his or her mother
If your doctor recommends it, take a daily dose of the low dosage aspirin. Aspirin can act as an inhibitor against your immune system from mistakenly attacking bone forming stem cells. This in turn, can augment our bone density.
Have you considered spending more time in the kitchen? With your mother?
Who taught your how to cook? Chances are, it was your mom. Did the two of you go over the spice rack and practice pronouncing the names? Did she ever show you turmeric? Turmeric spice contains polyphenols that can block bone-thinning compounds. Take heed, should you not want to walk at least fifteen minutes a daily, take a children's aspirin, listen to Sally Field or your mom-at least be adventurous enough to spice up your culinary skills by using more seasonings that have an Indian influence.
Moreover, you can always place of bottle of turmeric spice in your mother's stocking this Christmas... and one for your sister... and brother...
