Take notes. You don't want to hold them up from doing their jobs while writing allot of notes but you do want to take as many notes as you think that you will need to get the job done once they are done training you. If they are doing forms or something on the computer, ask them to print you out a blank copy and write the notes on that. This way you will have a copy of the task along with your notes. Most people will not object to printing something out so that you can write notes on. This is one of the easiest ways to learn a new assignment. While you have the paper in front of you, while they are filling it out on the computer you can write your notes in the blank sections of what should go in the section. If the form or document needs emailed to several people you will want to put that on the paper, or if it gets faxed write it down on the paper. This will be a time saver once you are on your own if you have everything written down. If you are looking over the form later that day or evening, and you have questions you can write down the questions to ask them later.
Ask them to give you a checklist of things that need done on a daily basis. This way you can add to it once you get on your own, but you will always have something to refer back to and to make sure that all the work has been completed every day. Without a check list things can be missed in the first few days that you are on your own.
In your notes you will want to write down names and phone numbers of people in the organization who you can call and get help from with different situations. This way you can quickly get your questions answered when you are on your own and prevent you from getting behind on your work.
Always ask questions about if you are unable to complete everything what is the most important tasks to complete, do certain things need done by a certain time, are there distribution lists to email people. Learning a new job can be exciting, and while not everyone can teach well, if you are prepared you can learn a new job from anyone training you.
