Tips to Help You Get Started with a Trailer

If you want to tow a boat, car or some other type of trailer there are a few tips you should know before you take off. The first thing you need when you are going to tow something is a vehicle that has the power to tow what you plan to move. For instance if you have a hitch on your Volkswagen Rabbit you will probably only be able to tow a small luggage trailer or perhaps a very light boat. To tow something like a camper or speed boat you are going to need a lot of power behind you such as with a truck or SUV.

Now that you have your vehicle chosen, take a minute to make sure it is ready to tow. Remember you will probably need to wire up a connector that will fit with your trailers whirring. This can be done by checking the wires that are meant for the trailer with a twelve volt tester. Now turn on one turn signal and test the wires until the small tester's light bulb lights up. Then mark it with a piece of tape or remember the color for later. Once you have done that repeat with the other turn signal and the brake lights. The remaining wire is most likely the ground that will connect everything back to the battery and allow them to work.

Now hitch up the trailer to the back of your car. You will want a friend to direct you to turn left and right in order to get the hitch to line up just right. Once you have lower the trailers hitch onto the ball and chain it to your car.

If your trailer also needs some work with the wiring check the wires the are sticking out to see where they go. You might want to clean them up a bit by cutting them to have a nice and not corroded piece sticking out. Now attach the colors that match together and test them by turning on your turn signals, and then pressing down on the brake. If the lights match accordingly then you are done if not you will need to find the correct match for each wire one at a time by taking them art and putting them on different wires until you find the correct one.

Once you have the connections correct secure them, and you should be ready to hit the road. Just be careful you do not jack knife whey you are backing up.
