Tips for Helping a Coworker Through a Divorce

Laura Fleenor
Going through a divorce can be a devastating experience for all parties involved. Chances are, you probably know someone who is going through a divorce or has recently been divorced. If you have a coworker who is going through a divorce, and you would like to help them through it, here are some things you can do.

Find ways to get your coworker out of the house. Whether it's having dinner with you, going to the movies, or going for a walk, getting them out of the house will work wonders in taking their mind off of the heart breaking event. If your coworker constantly stays at home they will have constant reminders of the divorce, just by looking around the house.

Suggest a good book or website to your coworker. If you suggest a good book or website about surviving divorce, your coworker may realize that their life is not over. If you suggest a book or website about something that they enjoy, this can take their mind off of the divorce.

If your coworker is a member of a church ask them to see their preacher, or you can point them in the direction of a good preacher that you know to help them through the difficult times. Even if you are not religious, many preachers actually specialize in marriage issues, and may be able to help.

Discourage your coworker from using substances to mask the pain. While many drugs and alcohol may provide a short term fix, in the long run it will make the pain worse. You do not want your coworker to trade a spouse for an addiction.

Do not try to set your coworker up with someone new. Divorces take time to overcome, and rushing into another relationship too soon is a good way to have another heartache. When the time is right for your coworker, they should decide for themselves when they are ready to date.

Exercise with your coworker. If you already have an exercise routine, ask your coworker to join you. If you do not have a regular exercise routine, it may be time to start one. Exercise can release endorphins that make you feel better and even give you the feeling of exhilaration.

Remember that you also have your own life to live, and you can not carry your coworker around on your back the rest of their lives. If nothing you try seems to help your coworker at least you know that you have tried.
