Tips for Higher Sales on eBay

Selling items in eBay has the potential to make a decent chunk of change. However, the site has become so popular that eBay stores and mass-produced items consume the bulk of the listings. With all that, the independent seller can always use a little bit of help. The three tips listed below won't guarantee a sale, but they can certainly increase your chances!

1) Do Your Research!!- If you only follow one rule when using eBay, make it this one. This is the most important thing to help insure a sale, while also earning you as much money as possible. Take the time to sit down and find out how much your item may be worth brand new. Look at several sites to get an average of what you might pay in a store. (Items such as movies, books, or clothes will most likely be priced pretty much the same everywhere, but more unique items can vary greatly.) Next, see what the item might be earning on eBay itself. Are there lots of listings for that type of product? And are people bidding on the ones that are already listed? Obviously, the more popular the item, the better chance of a sale. Of course, if you have something that few people are selling, that can increase your bids as well. Regardless of what you have, it always pays in the end to find out what it's worth and how much demand there is.

2) Come up With a Simple, Yet Catchy Title- Yeah, that sounds pretty cliché, but it is nevertheless the truth. The more interesting you make your item sound, the more likely it is that someone with be curious enough to check it out, even if it's just a pair of jeans. Words and phrases like rare, hard to find, vintage, embellished, and the mention of any high name brands are usually good draws. If your item is pretty plain, got creative. By all means, don't lie about it, that's pretty frowned upon in the eBay world, but you can always come up with something to make people look more closely. And one little tip-within-a-tip. Photos are now free to display on the main search page, so always use a photograph with your item. People are more willing to buy things that they've "seen."

3) Price Your Items Competitively- Remember that first tip about doing your research? Well, you can use that information here. Whatever the average price of that item is on eBay, make your listing a dollar or two less. This can work to your advantage is two possible ways. It can either insure that your item sells before someone else's, or it can create a bidding war for your "lower priced" item, driving that price up before the auction ends. Either way, you come out the winner! Use this same strategy when it comes to naming a shipping price as well. It's no secret that some sellers on eBay make their money off of their shipping, and as a result, most shipping costs are far too high. The average seller could lower their prices by at least a couple of dollars, and still come out ahead, as well as making their items more desirable. This makes happier eBay-ers all around.

The more popular an item you have, the better the chance of it selling, but the more rare of an item you have, the higher the bids are likely to go.
