Tips for Hiring a Lawyer

Jim Posey
If you are seeking a lawyer to help with your case by flipping through a phone book you are probably just about fed up with all the schmarmy ads piling up in your consciousness. How can you tell which firm is in it for your best interest and which just wants to milk you as a cash cow?

Firstly, don't hire a lawyer that actively seeks your business. If you did not initiate interaction with a lawyer and you are contacted by a law firm or someone representing them then that is not a law firm you want to have any business with. The industry calls this ambulance chasing and is not only uncouth but also against Legal Rules of Professional Conduct. You can imagine how trustworthy a lawyer who will break laws to get at your money is. Don't hire these people to represent you.

Make sure that you will be able to handle the fees. There is a lot of lawyer speak when it comes with the legal fees. Ask your lawyer specifically if he will take money off the top or if he will calculate the fees as a percentage of the outcome of the case. Get this in writing. This might put off some lawyers but there is no reason for people to represent you if they feel uncomfortable with this simple task. You should also know exactly what fees your lawyer will charge you for. Some lawyers will charge you for court costs, photocopying, and meal expense. Nice. Only pay for fees you are comfortable with and k now the fees that your lawyer wants to charge you.

See if you can find a lawyer that specializes in the type of case that you are dealing with. A lot of good lawyers find themselves so proficient with their type of law that they make the decision to focus only on those type of cases. This is the best option but if you can not find a lawyer with any type of specialization that matches your case ask the lawyer if there was any case that he has handled similar to yours and ask to see the documents describing it. Experience is mandatory when finding a lawyer to represent you.

Don't hire sue happy lawyers. Some lawyers want to make sure that you sue someone because suing is a very costly and timely procedure. Make sure your lawyer has an open mind concerning what options you have to run with. It may be better for you to go with mediation or another legal technique that will be least costly for you in the long run.
